"Russell W. Niemants , 86 ,
died March 26, 2006, at Iowa Medthodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday a First Baptist Church, with Pastor Conrad Lundberg officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Estel Perrin Avry Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. with his family present from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church or the Honduras Orphanage through the church.
He was born on September 2, 1919, in Killduff, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Nellie (Van Zante) Niemantsverdriet. His family moved to Grinnell when he was young and he graduated from Grinnell High School. He began farming and later enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, where he served in Santa Rosa, Calif. It was at this time he was united in marriage to Doris Birchland on December 5,1943, in Santa Rosa, Calif. At the end of the war they returned to Marshalltown where he worked at the Marshalltown Manufacturing until retiring in 1983. He will be remembered as a pitcher for the Strand Bakery softball team, and he played in other church and industrial leagues, too.
Russell was a long time member of First Baptist Church where he was an usher and a former deacon, a member of the Builders Sunday School Class, and the Frank Lewis Glick Post 46 of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife Doris of Marshalltown; a son James Niemantsverdriet of Wabasha, Minn ; a daughter Pamela Niemantsverdriet Kottmann of Wonder Vu, Colo ; four grandchildren ; and a sister Lena Booy of Battle Creek, Mich..
Preceding Russell in death were his parents ; three brothers Lester, Harry, and Donald; and a sister Ruby."
