Great Decisions Class 6. ITERVENTION Friday, 29 February 2013
Pre-Meeting Notes
Intervenation : the international responsibility to protect citizens if their government
can-or-will not. The topic came to the front with dictators allowing tribal wars to go on
or even leading them. That was used as the excuse for Europe in Libya against Qaddafi, and France's activity in Mali. But Syria is backed by Russia and too big to address directly. So now we are wondering if the R2P (responsibility to protect) is anything but talk. And some of us wonder if it is a good idea anyway? Covert aid was the traditional way for us (U.S.) to take sides. That was a CIA mission. Of course, that is controversial, too. In my humble opinion, aid should come with a requirement to support additional aid for education including for girls (women can reduce wars) and including teaching of Basic English which will allow our story for democracy get out, access to entertainment and advertizing, so that international trade will be built tieing us together.
Could be a good discussion with all the liberals in the class. Wish I had more time to prepare.
